Introducing the Spider and the Crocodile





What is the Spider and the Crocodile?


This is an original Anansi Story written by Khaleshia Thorpe-Price. Anansi seeks the aid of Crocodile to move large amounts of fruit from the garden, across the river to his mountaintop home. Crocodile plans to take all of the fruit for herself. However, Anansi is a step ahead of her. This story is part of a larger project, The Diaspora of the Trickster. In the series, the audience learns about the journey of the African Trickster as they engage in trickster tales from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Southern United States.

This story is the second in a series of three. The first story takes place in West Africa. This story takes place in Jamaica. Anansi lives on the top of a beautiful mountain with gorgeous views. However, there is no food there for him to eat. He must travel down the mountain and across the river to the garden. The themes of this story include greed, teamwork, and character traits..



Who is it for?


This interactive puppetry performance is perfect for early learners in Pre-K or Kindergarten. The show is presented with shadow puppets and hand puppets to engage and captivate young audiences.


The story requires active participation from the audience. The audience will use their actor’s tools of body, voice, and imagination to help tell the story and physicalize the characteristics of the characters and the setting. In addition, they will learn about the African Diaspora, Sign Language, and Mindfulness Strategies.


*This is a small-group performance intended for individual classrooms. This will allow the children to have a close encounter with the story and the characters in their classroom space.
